Tuscany and Isle of Procida Tour with Gino Troia.
We depart late afternoon Baltimore-Washington International or Philadelphia and we arrive at the Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome where our tour bus will meet us. Picturesque ride through the Tuscan countryside to Siena and to the Etruscan small town of San Quirico D' Orcia. We will take care of check-in at our hotel Palazzo Del Capitano, with only 11 rooms. Relax in its fragrant garden with local wines, cheeses and home made prosciutto. Dinner at the hotel restaurant at 8:30 pm (if you have room for dinner). After a delicious breakfast at the hotel we are off to discover our surroundings of the Sienese territoty, whose landscape and rolling hills were celebrated by Renaissance painters. We will let you loose in Siena and Pienza today. You will be free to wander by yourself, window shop or shop for real, smell the coffee and the fresh pastries, visit the Duomo if you like, but meet our bus at a designated time. Dinner at the hotel restaurant at 8:30 pm. Breakfast fit for kings again at our hotel. Gianfranco, our own driver, will pick us up at 9 sharp to take us to Umbria where we will visit the two jewels of this region, Perugia and Assisi. On the way back we will visit Gino's good friend Luca at his estate to sample his best wine and prosciutto, which he is very proud of. We will enjoy a relaxing dinner at our hotel at 8:30 pm. We succumb again to a breakfast of fresh juice, cappuccino, croissants, fruits, prosciutto, cheese, pastries, and Tuscan bread. Today we will depart for a visit to Maremma, the land of the butteri, the Tuscan cowboys. No guarantees we will run into them, but you will be introduced to at least one. Today lunch is on Gino, but it will be a surprise. We will dine at the hotel at 8:30 pm. After a great breakfast (yet again) it's time to say goodbye to the Palazzo Del Capitano and our host Massimo, his beautiful wife and attentive staff. We board our bus heading south to Campania, to Gino's hometown of Napoli. We exchange cypresses and vineyards for palm trees and lemon groves. From Napoli we will take the ferry to the charming isle of Procida, in the Gulf of Naples, where we will enjoy the beaches, the food and wine of the island. We will check-in at our private Mediterranean villa, which will be our residence for the rest of the trip. Gino will personally prepare our dinner. Enjoy it at the villa.
Breakfast at the villa. We are going on a guided tour of Pompeii and if not overwhelmed we will visit Amalfi and Positano (otherwise we will come back tomorrow). Enjoy our marvelous dinner at the villa terrace under the stars, the same stars that inspired many parabolas for Pablo Neruda. Breakfast at the villa. Today we will visit the frenetic city of Naples, thousands of years old, very Meditarranean, very European, very Middle Eastern. We will visit Piazza Del Plebiscito with the Royal Palace, the Galleria (mall) and the San Carlo, the oldest opera house in Italy. If you are not tired, Gino will take you to the Museo di San Martino. We end the day with another memorable relaxing dinner at the villa. After breakfast at the villa our bus will take us to the ferry and back to the mainland to Pozzuoli, the birthplace of Sofia Loren, north of Naples. Solfatara, a volcanic crater, as well as several Roman ruin sites of great historical interest are in this area. You can relax with a massage or mud pack at the local spa. The specialties in the local restaurants is seafood, so be brave, look at the fish heads, eat the whole thing, you will live longer. Dinner back at our Procida villa prepared by Gino or better yet he will take you to the best restaurant on the island. Breakfast at the villa. This is the day you can do whatever you wish. Shop or just bask in the bright Mediterranean sun, enjoy the beauty around you, shop for souvenirs, listen to the waves, thank Partenope, the Greek siren that lives in the gulf. Or take the boat to Naples and get lost. Watch Gino fry anchovies and enjoy another Procida inspired dinner at our villa and have a good night's rest for our trip. It's time to pack up. After breakfast at the villa we are off to the mainland and to airport for our flight to Baltimore. If some of you want to ask for political asylum now is the time, no one will blame you. Ciao!
